Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family go about their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
