Puzzling Rosy Sludge on Isolated Tasmanian Shoreline Raises Fears of Likely Phytoplankton Proliferation
Agencies in Tasmania are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has materialized on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers concerned it could be an algae outbreak.
Broad Appearance On Shore
The pink-tinged sludge was found on a stretch of a southern bay about 37 miles south of the city. A comparable ooze has also been documented on parts of another local beach and Little Taylors Bay.
Specimens Gathered for Analysis
Examples have been gathered and provided to the environmental agency for testing. A representative stated that "algae outbreaks are a natural event in reaction to variations in food sources, heat, rain or illumination".
"These blooms are sometimes called reddish tides because the proliferations can color the water red," the official added. "Few phytoplankton events are dangerous, with many species serving as a primary source of nourishment for marine life in the marine food web."
"The most common cause of reddish water in Tasmanian waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce bioluminescent light displays at night."
Rising Rate Associated with Environmental Shifts
Phytoplankton proliferations are natural events but their rate has risen in recent years, partially due to environmental shifts and contamination that combine to create food-loaded oceans ideal for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that typically function as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a proliferation, there is a fast increase in their populations that interferes with the healthy balance of marine environments.
These phenomena have been likened to marine infernos and can keep expanding as long as circumstances are favorable. In severe cases, sensitive marine ecosystems can be destroyed as marine life is killed or suffocated, supplying more food for the proliferation.
Previous Devastating Event in South Australia
A southern state in the past confronted a severe algal bloom along its southern shore after a series of sea temperature spikes, which extended across thousands of square kilometres. The outbreak caused surfers with irritated eyes and persistent coughs and may have caused the death of up to 250,000 marine animals across 400 different species, according to government calculations.
Scientist Analysis on the Current Situation
A marine expert, who assisted in examining the beginning of that event stated, based on images of the local event, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a type of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".

"You usually see a proliferation of the organism after a outbreak of a different species, or for example a marine breeding," she added.
Appeals for Response and Safety Concerns
Lilly Henley, who took samples of the magenta ooze in the state, stated it seemed the suspected bloom had "grown significantly" and suggested the aquaculture sector was the most likely culprit, citing similar cases elsewhere.
"So Tasmania needs to issue a clear message here, the authorities and the EPA need to respond to this. We need to analyse the samples we've collected and we need to put word out the people here," she said.
She said she had worries for public safety after feeling a numbness along her limbs and skin while being splashed with contaminated seawater.
Reports of Dead Marine Life and Calls for Government Action
An conservation group has documented lifeless animals and dead sea cucumbers appearing on the coast, with a longtime environmental campaigner calling the circumstances as an "environmental emergency" and calling on the local leader to inspect and "lead the response that authorities must be making".
"The leader needs to know this is a catastrophe in the happening, commercially as well as ecologically."

Speaking to reporters, the official said he was did not know of any links between the algal bloom and the aquaculture sector, saying scientific testing was needed before conclusions could be drawn.
